Urban Times News has played an important role in Jersey City's media landscape since its founding in 1995. Established by the late Bobby Jackson and the late Glenn Cunningham, alongside co-founder Joe Cardwell, the publication was created with a mission to provide strong community-centered journalism and a platform focused on issues that directly impact local residents.
From the beginning, Urban Times News positioned itself as a voice for neighborhoods often overlooked by mainstream outlets, covering local politics, civic engagement, education, community development, and stories that reflected the everyday experiences of Jersey City residents. Its founders envisioned a publication that would inform, challenge, and connect the community while amplifying perspectives that deserved greater visibility.
Over the years, the paper has built a reputation not only for reporting but for active civic participation. Urban Times News has endorsed thirty-four political candidates who went on to achieve electoral success, highlighting its influence within local and regional political conversations. The publication has also supported 82 successful legislative measures aimed at improving quality of life, economic opportunity, and community advancement throughout Jersey City.
Today, Urban Times News continues the legacy established by its founders — combining community focus with strong local journalism to inform and empower readers across the city.
